The Almaty Jazz Festival (Kazakh State Philharmonic named after Zhambyl) is this week (tonight’s the last night) and a few of us went down on the opening night. We caught the David Reinhardt Quintet (France) and Mike del Ferro (Netherlands). Both performances were great and thoroughly enjoyed the accordian in the quintet.
April seems to be quite a month for musical festivals. There’s an opera festival celebrating Verdi’s 200th anniversary (April 4 – “La Traviata”; April 5 – “Aida”; April 6 – “Requiem”; April 7 – Gala performance) at the Opera House named after Abai. There’s an international piano competition next week at the Kazakh National Conservatory. And the list goes on. One of the things that I love about living here is that music, concert, and performance tickets are so accessible and inexpensive.
Of course, it is the end of term and so, there are piles of grading + anxious students + incessant requests for documents, documents, and more documents. But as the saying goes, a little jazz every day, keeps the doctor away (or something like that). 🙂
