Another thing that came to mind when I was thinking about this week’s photo challenge is the role of history in social memory. I was in Berlin earlier this year for a conference and saw the above installation behind the Bundestag. It’s a glass installation with the German Constitution written on it as a symbol of being transparent and accessible to the people. And yet, as time (and society) moves forward, there is the need to remember the lessons of the past…
This was taken outside a U-bahn station in Berlin that also served to send people to the listed concentration camps.
Then there is the Holocaust Memorial made up of concrete blocks that stretch in front of you in what feels like an entire city block.
In a sense, forward movement can’t be measured without thinking about “from whence one came” and how that informs “to where one goes”.
